Glassware & Flatware
Seven glass styles and a full flatware service — what your guests actually drink and eat with. Part of ACME’s food and beverages range.
Which Glasses Does Your Event Need?
Fewer types than a caterer will tell you, and more of each than you expect.
ACME stocks the working set: an all-purpose wine glass, a 14oz stemless wine glass, a 6oz fluted champagne glass, an 11oz water/tea goblet, an 11oz double old fashioned and an 11oz high ball.
Most events need three: water, wine, and one bar glass. Add champagne if there is a toast. That covers a wedding, a gala and a corporate dinner without a shelf of specialist stemware nobody uses.
The count is the part people underestimate — guests set glasses down and take a fresh one. Plan for more glasses than guests.
Stemmed Or Stemless Wine Glasses?
A formality decision with a practical edge.
The all-purpose stemmed wine glass is the traditional choice — it reads formal, it photographs well on a set table, and it is what a wedding or a gala expects.
The 14oz stemless is sturdier, harder to knock over, and easier for guests holding a plate at a standing reception. It reads relaxed and modern.
Rough rule: seated dinner, stemmed. Standing reception or anything outdoors on grass, stemless. Plenty of events use both — stemmed at the tables, stemless at the bar.
What Is The Difference Between A High Ball And A Double Old Fashioned?
Height and what goes in them.
The 11oz high ball is tall and narrow — built for a long drink with mixer and ice. Gin and tonic, whisky and soda, a soft drink, iced tea.
The 11oz double old fashioned is short and wide — a spirit over ice, a cocktail served short, a whisky neat. It also doubles as a heavy-bottomed water glass at a less formal table.
Between them they cover almost any bar. If you are only taking one, take the high ball — it does more jobs badly, whereas the old fashioned does fewer jobs well.
Do You Need Champagne Glasses And Water Goblets?
Champagne: only if there is a toast. Water: almost always.
The 6oz fluted champagne glass is single-purpose. If your run of show has a toast, you need one per guest and they get used once. If it does not, skip them.
The 11oz water/tea goblet is the opposite — it is the most-used glass at any seated event. It is on the table before guests sit and it gets refilled all night. In Houston it doubles as the iced tea glass, which is most of why it earns its place.
The goblet is the one to over-order. Nobody notices enough water glasses; everybody notices running out.
What Flatware Do You Get?
A full flatware and silverware service — the knives, forks and spoons a seated meal needs.
The planning question is the menu, not the guest count. A single-course buffet needs one setting. A three-course plated dinner needs a setting per course, which multiplies fast — and if the caterer is not clearing between courses, it multiplies again.
Flatware also has to match what it sits on. It goes down with the china, on a linen, on a table — one order, ideally.
Ask your caterer for the service plan before you count flatware. They know how many forks the menu needs.
How Do Glassware And Flatware Come Back?
Clean, dry and in the containers they arrived in — that is the whole policy, and it is worth knowing before the last hour of your event.
Glassware, silverware, china and serving pieces should be rinsed clean and returned in their original containers. Items returned needing extra cleaning attract additional charges, so it is worth telling whoever is breaking down the event.
The practical version: assign it. The one job nobody is given at 1am is rinsing glasses, and it is the one that costs money afterwards.
