Planning a Stage: The Decisions That Matter
Size follows use. A podium speaker needs far less platform than a six-piece band with amps and a drum riser. List everything that will be on the stage at once — people, instruments, AV, furniture — and size from that, not from guesswork. Height follows the room: modular riser systems build in steps, and the flatter and deeper the audience area, the more height the stage needs for sightlines. Placement follows flow: put the stage where the audience naturally faces, with power nearby, clear cable paths, and backstage access for performers.
Then plan the supporting cast. Stairs with handrails where performers enter; skirting so the structure looks finished; lighting so faces read from the back; AV so voices carry; pipe and drape for the backdrop. Outdoors, staging interacts with ground conditions — one of many reasons to have professionals install it. Build the Stage Into the Whole Event
Staging works best planned with the rest of the space, not bolted on. Inside a tent, stage placement affects tent size and layout; a dance floor usually sits directly in front of a band stage; power, lighting, and AV all route around the platform.
